During the National Socialist era (1933 – 1945), many Munich citizens avoided the east side of the Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz. There was a “memorial” for the putschists killed during the Hitler putsch on November 9, 1923. A “guard of honor” consisting of two uniformed and armed SS guards posed there around the clock. Passers-by were required to give the “Hitler salute”. Many passers-by therefore took the route through Viscardigasse to get to Odeonsplatz. This gave rise to the popular nickname “Drückebergergassl”. Bruno Wank’s meandering bronze trail laid in the pavement is a reminder of this silent form of resistance among Munich’s population.
