Architects for Future: Building revolution instead of demolition! Screen printing workshop
Building turnaround concerns us all – because affordable housing requires a change in the current housing strategy. In a city where affordable housing is a scarce commodity, where there is a lot of vacant space and where there is also huge potential for creating living space in existing buildings, A4F (Architects for Future) believes that a new strategy is needed – away from demolition and new construction and towards conversion, activation of vacant space, refurbishment and remodelling.
Buildings and the construction industry are currently responsible for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany and more than half of the waste produced. But there is another way: there is enormous potential for savings in this area. This is why Architects for Future has been campaigning for a holistic turnaround in construction for over 5 years.
In order to stop playing off ecological and social aspects against each other, the creation of living space in existing buildings has a key role to play:
“Rethink the needs”, “question demolition critically” and “take social responsibility” are three of the 10 demands with which A4F advocates building within planetary boundaries and a future worth living for all. More detailed information can be found here:
Building turnaround instead of demolition: affordable, climate-friendly housing needs a building turnaround!
