In summer 2023, “The Wolpertinger Project” by artist Gabi Blum took place in the Neulustheim neighbourhood as part of Annuale 2023 on the subject of open spaces. The central component of the project was the backdrop of a fake house façade, which was erected on one of the vacant properties at Menzinger Straße 118 and provided a temporary meeting place in the neighbourhood for six weeks. The project questions and comments on the controversial situation in the housing estate, where properties between Waldhorn-, Lechel- and Menzinger Straße have reverted to the state of Bavaria after 100 years of leasehold and have been empty for several years in some cases, and also addresses and discusses the social and historical situation of this particular neighbourhood.
In addition to the audiovisual research that Blum has been conducting in the neighbourhood since 2021, tours with guided tours, screenings and hearings with other guests took place in the summer of 2023, during which the former Wolpertinger forest economy, which gives the project its name, was revived. Visitors were able to learn about the neighbourhood, residents opened up their gardens and houses and told their stories. At the end of each tour, there was a pub situation in front gardens. Guests included artist Irene Bauer-Conrad, who lives in the neighbourhood; Munich musician Federico Sánchez, who led a tour about Sam Spence, the former resident of Menzinger Straße 118; Dieter Rehm, photographic artist and former president of the Munich Art Academy, who had his first room in Munich in the estate; and Sandra Hauser, who made forays into the neighbourhood with her project „I would prefer not to“ and horse Don Orèo.
