Between 1950 and 1995, Radio Free Europe (RFE) – from 1976 together with Radio Liberty (RL) – broadcast from a building at Oettingenstraße 67 in Munich. The artistic intervention in July 2025 addresses the ambivalence between the broadcaster’s democratic claim and its propagandistic reality through a personal and spatial confrontation. In the auditorium of the extension building, a sound installation can be heard throughout the day on 12 July – a vector space of improvised singing that reacts to rare recordings of the systematically jammed RFE/RL signal. An accompanying publication will be shown in the foyer, containing archive material from the Czechoslovak radio series “Vzkazy domů” (Messages Home, 1951-1953), which has been translated into German.
Andrea Veselá, born 1991, lives and works in Munich.
Sound installation in collaboration with Vasilii Vikhliaev.
