“Nachleben. Eine Spurensuche zu Orten rechter Gewalt und zu Stimmen der Resilienz” [Afterlife. An exploration of places of right-wing violence and voices of resilience] is a work by artist Cana Bilir-Meier in collaboration with curator Chana Boekle and graphic designer Silvia Troian, which will be on display in Munich for several weeks from the end of June 2026 as part of the PUBLIC ART MÜNCHEN FOCUS YEAR.
The art installation consists of around 15–20 sculptures in the form of street signs with specially designed motifs. These commemorative signs have been developed in cooperation with Munich-based victims and survivors of right-wing violence, following extensive discussions and interviews.
The signs give voice to their perspectives, their memories, their resilience and also their struggles and demands.
The Berlin-based artist collective Guerrilla Architects was invited to design and implement a mobile exhibition platform that allows the sign sculpture to be moved around Munich’s urban space. https://www.guerrillaarchitects.de/.
The artwork will be displayed for some 10 days at selected, relevant locations in public spaces around the city, for example on June 20, 2026, in commemoration of the racist murder of the NSU victim Theodoris Boulgarides, and on July 22, 2026, to mark the 10th anniversary of the racist, right-wing terror attack at the Olympia Shopping Center (OEZ). https://muenchen-erinnern.de/
(More dates to follow.)
The art project will be accompanied for its duration by a comprehensive interdisciplinary program with discussions, workshops, guided tours, performances, concerts and gatherings.
Participants include the Initiative München OEZ Erinnern, NSU Watch, Guerilla Architects and the artists’ collective Grupo de Arte Callejero from Argentina, whose work Carteles de la Memoria (Memory Signs) served as inspiration for Nachleben. https://archivogac.ar/
