The Public Art München Focus Year showcases art in public space, featuring local and international artists who aim to address the question of how we communicate with our surroundings, how we interact with them and how we ourselves can create an impact. The objective is to rediscover the various possibilities of public space as an environment that invites us to broaden our perspectives and bring people together.
The Focus Year will feature six art projects, each offering a distinct take on the public sphere. The themes are set by the artists themselves and are as multifaceted as the urban landscape itself. The topics range from the visible and invisible water cycles of the Isar and the city’s drinking water supply, trees as carriers of stories and memories, forms of self-empowered remembrance of right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence in Munich, outdoor swimming pools as sites of social conflict, activism in football to the history and origins of sign language in global and historical contexts.
Featured artists include:
Cana Bilir-Meier, Sofia Dona, Christiane Huber, Marjetica Potrč & OOZE, Raumfragen, Christine Sun Kim & Thomas Mader and Feda Wardak, among others.
Public Art Excursions will also feature artistic performances by Munich-based artists throughout the city. Click here for the invitation to tender.
As part of the the Focus Year, the large billboard on Lenbachplatz will be relocated to Neuperlach where it will be redesigned in close cooperation between the artist collective Raumfragen and the local community.
In addition, the new Artothek Pavillon in the inner courtyard of Burgstraße 4 will become a dedicated Public Art Pavillon for two months. Visitors can expect karaoke, art activities, talks and spaces for reflection.
